Audiences Defined

Audiences Defined

Audiences are defined into categories of what they like and dislike, the way they access media and then how they share information with others.  Productions are aimed at specific audiences and so marketing strategies will different depending on the market.  The content, techniques and manor the feature is constructed will also depend on the market, which is why research is important to get these areas right to be successful.

Audience profiles are created to help give an understanding into the mind of the average target audience.

Purposes of Market, Audience and Production Researches (Also Methods, Techniques & Sources of Information)

There are three ways an audience can respond to a product. Number one would be acknowledging engaging with it, number two would be identifying with it an interpreting it, and number three would be totally ignoring it and disregarding it.

The purpose of market research is to gather information on markets, customers and consumers. It is a business strategy to identify what appeals to your chosen market and what your chosen target audience identfies with. Many companies see market research as a competition and they often compete with other companies to analyse the same chosen market. Some companies end up getting what they are into right, others end up getting it wrong because they don’t analyse the research closely enough. Some companies do get it right but it is often to late as another company has already worked it out and they have already produced content for that market so that gap in the market is gone as anything similar to it would be seen as an attempt to rip the other company’s product off and ‘copy it’. This is the main reason why copyright is put on content so people don’t ‘copy it’.

‘Doctor Who’ is much more colourful nowadays than it used to be. Obviously when it first started off it was in black and white but even when it went into colour in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, it still wasn’t as colourful as it is now. Also the fonts used are a lot more prominent and bold on screen and they stand out more, not just in the title sequence, but in recent episodes it has even given the year and the location away at the start of the episode in the form of bold text. Obviously in the title sequence the font is much larger and centered as that information is more important than the year and location information, which is small and at the side of the screen. In the title sequence you don’t just have the ‘Doctor Who’ logo, but also the name of the episode and the name of the writer after the ‘Doctor Who’ logo has been displayed, and the actresses and actors names before the ‘Doctor Who’ logo is displayed. Target audience comes into it too, as when ‘Doctor Who’ first started it was quite moody, dark and mysterious whereas nowadays it’s more cheerful and it has more comedy elements, and the colours and font being different in the program over the years were used to reflect this.
